NCAA Football Playoff Proposal (updated)

Dec. 2, 2018 - The 4 teams that will compete for the 2018 college football National Championship - Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma have been announced.  While those 4 schools are obviously ecstatic at getting these coveted bids, schools like Georgia, Ohio State and Central Florida are left wondering what else they could have done to earn one of those spots.  I believe a reasonable case can be made for all three.

While there will always be controversy relative to the final teams selected selected, whether it's 4, 6, 8 or even 16 teams, I have come up with a proposal that the NCAA should consider.  My proposal is based on three principals:

1 - Winning a power 5 conference (Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12) championship matters and secures an automatic bid.

2 - Given that the "power" in power 5 conferences implies that these are the elite conferences in the nation, it's reasonable to assume that there may be more than one deserving squad in a given conference.  Therefore, there needs to be a path to ensure these type of teams are given a chance, too.

3 - Non - power 5 schools that have a special season should be given a chance, too.

Here's how my proposal works:

All 5 power conference champions are in.

So, how do we choose the final three teams?

The NCAA schedules two games amongst the highest ranked 4 teams that are not participating in a power 5 conference championship game.  These two games will be played on the same weekend as the power 5 championship games.  The highest seeded team is the home team.  This means that non-power 5 conferences that wish to be considered will have to schedule their championship games prior to this weekend so that if they have a deserving team, it can play in one of the NCAA scheduled games.

Originally, I had proposed that the winners of these two games are automatically in the eight team playoff.  However, after feedback, and some more thought, I'll take back that part of the proposal. The main reason is that it may be too rewarding to teams not involved in a power 5 championship game to just automatically get a bid.  So I propose that the final three spots be selected by a committee.this weekend is essentially a win and your in weekend.  There needs to be a little drama.

That's my proposal.
